Larry Rumans spoke about the Casas Adobes Rotary page on the GoFundMe website that is up and running. Currently he doesn’t know how to link it to our website or Facebook page but believes it can be done. He stressed how important social media is in reaching out to young people to advertise the club and its activities. He plans to set up a social media committee with the aim connecting us more on social media. Doug Woodard suggested handing out notices at the Honors Breakfast to make people aware of our social media contacts.
Mike Lavor spoke extensively about the logistics for the Honors Breakfast. With one more meeting to go before the event, he passed out the sign-up sheet for everyone to volunteer for different duties. Set-up will begin at 5:30 am and breakfast will be started at 6:20. There will be more discussion next week. Because the two scholarship winners from Mountain View High School will not be able to attend, Willis Horak and Laura Ziady will attend an honors assembly at the high school on May 7th to award them their scholarships.
Willis gave a wrap-up of the raffle. He needed clarification regarding some of the winners and contacting them. Doug mentioned that someone he sold a ticket to was willing to donate the prize back to the club. He suggested giving it to Sarah Chambers, our 4-Way Test Speech contestant.
Mike Kloehn and Larry Rumens will be attending the Rotary Spring Training in Green Valley on Saturday, May 4th.
Ben Hurley, Head Coach at Amphitheater High School who runs the Summer Basketball Program Summer Kids League gave the program along with two graduating seniors, Cohen Kimmel and Jireh Schmidt. For the high school students, the program involves workouts and skill development. For grades 4 through 7, the older participants act as coaches, referees and role models. The $20 registration fee covers a uniform and free lunch every day but is sometimes totally or partially waived for kids who qualify. There is an award ceremony the end of program which runs through June. For the high schoolers, there is a trip to San Diego for a tournament at Point Loma University.
The total cost of the program is about $25,000. Casas Adobes Rotary Foundation has helped sponsor this program for many years and is doing so again this year. Pat Farrell presented Coach Hurley with a check for $3,000.
